Great directions, Jan. I've been doing the first two exercises most of my life. I'm convinced of their value. Thanks.

Comment on Do You Need a Tempurpedic Foam Mattress? by Pam Hoffman

Thank you for the interesting information.

I took my chiropractor's advice and recently went shopping for a mattress, and we asked about the 'memory foam' type.

The folks at the store told us something interesting and had a very graphic demonstration.

They said that the memory foam type stops springing back after awhile, or it springs back too slowly.

Then they took us to the front of the building where they pulled out from under a headboard leg, two pieces of foam - one was the type from those commercials and one was from the mattress they were recommending to us.

The one they were recommending sprang right back into shape. The other one was not springing back at all.

And that was their point.

Have a care when you do your research on these types of mattresses! We got the foam they suggested - it had other qualities as well like antibacterial, etc.

I think you definitely want something to fit your curves. The ones from the commercial even look like they spring back very slowly.

Just my 2 cents,

Pam Hoffman

Great article. I really like the way you have presented this. I am heartened to hear that physicians are being encouraged to take a more conservative approach for acute low back pain, meaning, less costly and invasive studies, and encouraging activity and self help (yes, massage!).

I think the body "knows" what to do and certainly we know what we feel. It is discouraging and difficult to live with chronic pain, but our past attempts at dealing with it have certainly fallen short.
Cheers &
Happy New Year.

That is a top post. I suffer with some chronic pain from time to time. In my case it is almost always muscular with each side of the spine pulling in opposite directions. The only cure is to get it moving with some effective back stretches. So I agree that exercise is the key.

Thanks! I don't really know what's going on with your back (the degree of pain, etc.), but as a general rule, your lower back muscles are probably strong enough. What you need to strengthen is your abdominal muscles, which will protect your back and stabilize your pelvis and lumbar spine. So, if you're not already doing this, some basic abdominal crunches would be perfect to start with. (Don't do full sit-ups, though, or you'll injure your back)! Another good thing to do is just suck in your tummy muscles for a count of 5 or 10 several times a day. That strengthens a different muscle, the rectus abdominus, than you work when you do crunches. If you want more info, just email me through my contact form. take care ~jan

Great information. Very simple. When I go to my doctor for the back pain I have he just says to stretch but it seems to be doing no good. I have been doing the things that are listed on the sheet he gave me for more than a year and nothing. I do exercise, but just running on the treadmill. I guess I really have never thought of doing something to build the muscle. Now all i need answered is what is a good LOWER back exercise for strength to start with???
