You've probably seen ads for those memory foam or Tempurpedic foam mattresses. Everyone seems to be talking about them. Well, one reason they're so popular is that they actually work.

Blissful, pain-free sleep!

Wouldn't it be great if we could all sleep comfortably anywhere or in any position like this blissful (or maybe just exhausted) young woman. Those days are long gone for most of us (and never existed for some).

Who's Been Sleeping In Your Bed?

Probably not you. At least not very much. If you're in pain, you probably spend a lot of time tossing and turning, moaning and groaning, trying to find a comfortable position but not quite being able to. There's a good chance your mattress is the culprit, at least partially. You have curves (some of us more than others), your mattress doesn't. You turn, your mattress bounces. If your mattress is too soft, you just sink in, which can be agony on a bad back. If it's too firm, it's like sleeping on a rock. So…

The Scoop on Memory Foam

Memory foam was developed by NASA back in the 70's for the space program. I'm not going to get into the composition (it's mostly polyurethane and stuff - Google it yourself if you want), but it was originally marketed to hospitals in the form of mattress pads to decrease bed sores, with impressive results. What makes it so cool is that it has some of the qualities of both a solid and a liquid - that's why when you press your hand into it, it leaves a print that slowly goes away.

So when you lie down on a memory foam mattress, it cradles your body and distributes your weight evenly, giving you a feeling of almost weightlessness. People talk about being free of back or neck pain for the first time in years. I have a massage client who was in an auto accident. After she'd been sleeping on a memory foam mattress for a few weeks, she was able to reduce the frequency of her massage sessions. Great for her pain, not to mention her pocketbook!

Tempurpedic brand mattresses can be pretty expensive. But Yoursleepstore.com uses exactly the same materials as the Tempurpedic brand at discount prices and offers free shipping for all their products. Their memory foam mattress come with a 20-year warranty and a low price guarantee. They have great customer service, too! So if you've checked out a Tempurpedic price list and recoiled in dismay, give these guys a try.

Thank you for the interesting information.

I took my chiropractor's advice and recently went shopping for a mattress, and we asked about the 'memory foam' type.

The folks at the store told us something interesting and had a very graphic demonstration.

They said that the memory foam type stops springing back after awhile, or it springs back too slowly.

Then they took us to the front of the building where they pulled out from under a headboard leg, two pieces of foam - one was the type from those commercials and one was from the mattress they were recommending to us.

The one they were recommending sprang right back into shape. The other one was not springing back at all.

    And that was their point.

Have a care when you do your research on these types of mattresses! We got the foam they suggested - it had other qualities as well like antibacterial, etc.

I think you definitely want something to fit your curves. The ones from the commercial even look like they spring back very slowly.

    Just my 2 cents,

    Pam Hoffman
